In my last project we utilized the JavaScript engine within Java to externalize business rules. This gave us great flexibility in changing logic without recompiling or restarting the server. The performance of the scripting engine was exceptional, especially in our use case. Further down the road however, we might require an extra speed boost. Here’s an article describing how to precompile scripts within the JavaScript engine straight to byte code:
